Standard 2005 Tour Program

Approximate Tour Time Allowance: 2 hours
Maximum Capacity: 40 (groups of 30-40 will be divided in two and run concurrently)
Minimum Group Size: 15
School Tour Availability: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Thursdays Tours are reserved for groups selecting the Trolley Ride Option.
10:00 a.m. - 3:00 pm, May - October, 2005

Tour Components (each guided by museum staff or docent)

  1. Introduction to the Museum.
  2. A visit with Mathilda, an original 19th century tugboat. Ring the original bell from the steamboat Mary Powell, "Queen of the Hudson" from 1861-1918.
  3. The Rondout Creek, "How Things have Changed".
  4. Tour of 2005 featured exhibit, "A Tale of Two Ports, Kingston and Newburgh" .
  5. Learn the dynamics of travel, shipping, industry and livelihoods through a passage of "Ringwald's River", featuring selections from Donald Ringwald's extensive collection of Hudson River memorabilia.
  6. Journey back in time to the 1850's to 1930's where steamships, tug boats and sloops were the primary mode of transportation for passenger travel and a thriving local industry.
  7. Hudson River Ecology: A noteworthy discussion about the Hudson River, its environment and its species and how they connect.
  8. Optional Video - choose from our divers library selections covering topics from the environment, tug boats and the ecology of the Hudson River.
  9. Visit to the Museum Store.

A nearby waterfront park is ideal for picnic lunches and there are many excellent restaurants in the Rondout Heritage District.

Optional 2005 Tour Components
Options are add-ons and can be included in your tour at your request. Each will be facilitated by Museum Staff and Docent. Optional tour components have different requirements for minimum and maximum numbers of participants.

Trolley Ride to Kingston Point (Thursdays only)
Price: $3.00 per visitor
Time allowance: Additional 1 hour (includes a visit to the Trolley Museum of NY)
Availability: Thursdays only, May - October
Maximum capacity: 30
Minimum group size: 20

Build a Tug Boat - children are able to build and paint their own wooden model tug boat:
Price: $3.00 per child
Time allowance: Additional 1 hour
Availability: Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays, May - October
Capacity: 15 to 30 (Groups of 30 will be divided in two and run concurrently. Groups larger than 30 wanting this option need to reserve multiple days)

Excursion tour aboard Motor Yacht Teal.
A choice of two unique waterfront tours are offered (weather permitting). 1) Inland following the path of the D&H Canal or 2) the Hudson past Kingston Point, the gateway to the Catskills. Historic narration is provided and can be focused on specific areas of classroom interest. Early development, native American influence, industrialization, the maritime history and environmental impacts can be discussed. Input from instructors and students welcomed:

Capacity: 35 (students) - 75
Availability: May through October

Boat trip and tour of the Rondout Lighthouse
In cooperation with Mid-Hudson Estuarine Services and the City of Kingston, boat rides and tours of the Rondout Lighthouse are available.
Time allowance: Additional 1 hour
Availability: Call the museum to schedule.

Cost per student: $4.00 (1 free chaperone for every 10 students)
